Pomeranians are sweet-little furry pooches that are known for their attractive coat, endearing looks, and plumed tail. These canines are immensely admired and adored by most dog lovers for their lively and playful personality and their friendly nature. Pom Poms are tremendously popular all around the world and their demand has always been fairly high in almost every major country. They are currently placed at #22 spot in the AKC’s list of most popular dog breeds that features 190 distinct canine breeds from all around the world, now, that’s impressive!

General Facts about Pomeranians

Name:
This breed’s name was inspired from the place where it was developed and perfected. Although they are probably from Iceland, these canines weren’t properly developed until they reached a small region in Germany which was called Pomerania. There, these dogs began to take shape and gradually they started to resemble the fluffy canines that we know and love today. And, because they were largely developed in Pomerania only, this breed was given the name ‘Pomeranians’.

Sled dogs:
In the past, Pomeranians were used to pull sleds and herd different animals. These canines are a part of the Spitz breed and they share a lot of characteristics with the wolves. It might come as a surprise to many but this breed is actually closely related to several arctic breeds such as Samoyeds, Alaskan Malamutes, Siberian Huskies et cetera.

Coat:
Pom Poms have a beautiful and fluffy double coat that needs a lot of attention from the owners of this breed. They have a dense and short undercoat and a long and harsh outer coat which can be found in several different colors like White, Black, Cream, Sable, Red, Grey Shaded, Brown, Tan, Chocolate, Brindle, Lavender et cetera. Their coat can have 23 different color combinations which are all accepted by the American Kennel Club.

Size:
These small and elegant canines used to look a lot different in the past. They were fairly heavy and big in size and used to weigh around 9 to 13 Kilograms, which is very high compared to their current average weight which usually lies somewhere between 1.5-3.5 Kilograms.
Historical Facts about Pomeranians

Origin:
The true ancestors of this breed were probably from Iceland and were considerably bigger in size than the Pom Poms that we see today. When these large-sized canines moved to Germany, they were bred with smaller breeds and gradually their size and stature decreased and they began to appear more like the fluffy pooches that we are familiar with today.

Queen Victoria:
The popularity of this breed skyrocketed once Queen Victoria came into power. She was a staunch admirer of this breed and because of her love and interest in the Pomeranians, several English breeders began to breed these canines and soon Pom Poms became a household name in almost whole of England. It is heavily rumored that at one time, Queen Victoria had 35 Pomeranians at her place and it all started when she was traveling to Italy and there, she met a very cute Pom Pom named Marco.

Teddy Roosevelt:
Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States, was also a known Pom lover. He had a sweet Pomeranian which he lovingly nicknamed as ‘Gem’ and it is believed that his mother developed a very strong bond with this furry pooch.

Michelangelo:
The immensely popular Italian sculptor and painter, Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni also was a proud Pomeranian owner and interestingly, his Pom was sitting right beside him when he was painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

Titanic:
In 1912, along with 2240 people, 12 canines also boarded the Titanic. But, as we all are familiar with history, they didn’t reach their destination as Titanic began sinking in the ocean after hitting a mighty iceberg. And, out of all the people, it is believed only 706 survived the disaster. And, when it comes to the canines, only 3 out of 12 survived that tragic accident, one was a Pekingese and other two were Pomeranians.

The Pomeranians were first recognized by the American Kennel Club as a distinct breed in the year 1888.

Extroverts:
Pomeranians are very affectionate and friendly canines that not only love and adore their owners and family members but they even like the attention of strangers as well. These dogs are happy to meet new people and make new friends and they even get along fairly well with other animals as well like cats and other canines.

Pomeranians are considered to be awesome watchdogs by their owners. These canines are known to effectively alert their owners in case of any intruders by barking at anyone who seems suspicious or untrustworthy.

Blue Pomeranian:
A blue Pomeranian is classified as such because of the color of its nose and not because of the color of its coat. A blue Pom Pom generally has a dull-black fur but its nose will definitely have a shade of blue color on it. Sometimes, a blue Pom Pom might also have blue-colored eyes as well.

Jiff, the Pom Pom:
In 2014, Jiff the Pom Pom set a Guinness World Record for "Fastest Dog on Two Paws." He ran five meters on his front legs and 10 meters only on his hind legs in 7.76 seconds and 6.56 seconds, respectively. This record was later broken by canine named Konjo who ran five meters on his front paws in only 2.39 seconds.
