General Facts about Rottweilers

  • Name:

    The ancestors of this breed might be of Roman descent, but they were perfected in Germany. These Roman dogs were crossbred with local German canines and that led to the creation of the Modern-day Rottweiler. And, since Germany had such an influence on the formation of this breed, they were named after a small German town called Rottweil.
  • Popularity:

    Rottweilers are one of the most popular big-sized breeds out there. According to the breed popularity list that is formulated by AKC every year, the Rottweilers are at the #08 spot (as of March 2018) on the list which features a total of 190 distinct dog breeds.
  • Purpose:

    Rotties served a great purpose to the Romans when they brought them along to Europe. These dogs drove the cattle from farms to market, they were also used for pulling their carts, and they even protected the money of their owners from robbers which they used to carry in a purse that was tied around their neck. These canines were also good at herding the livestock and guarding the animals and farms.

  • Size:

    Rottweilers are very powerful and robust canines. They are built like a tank and a fully grown Rottie can weigh up to 60 Kilograms and is almost 2 feet tall (at the shoulders).
  • Jaws:

    Rottweilers do have an exceptionally strong and sturdy jaw region. And, with great jaw comes a great bite and a Rottie’s bite is even stronger than Pit bulls and German Shepherds. Their bite has around 150 kilograms of force which is about 50% more than a German Shepherd’s bite.
  • Coat:

    Rottweilers are double coated. They have a short and smooth outer coat and they also possess an even shorter undercoat that is actually waterproof in nature.

Historical Facts about Rottweilers

  • Origin:

    The modern-day Rottweilers are derived from a Roman Mastiff-type dog that was called as Molossus. This ancient breed is extinct now but it is thought to be the true ancestors of most of today’s mastiff-type canines. The Romans brought these dogs with them when they traveled to Europe to conquer it.
  • On the verge of Extinction:

    The Rotties were mainly used for herding purposes in Germany, but with the emergence of Railroads in the mid-1880s, the need for Rotties declined. And, because of that their numbers took a huge hit and they were almost on the brink of extinction. But, because of the efforts of several breeders from Germany and other parts of the world, who were great admirers of this breed, the Rottweiler breed saw a revival and gradually their numbers started to become respectable once again.
  • New Job:

    After railroads hijacked their first job, the Rotties found another useful purpose in life. Around the early 1900s, the Rottweilers starting serving as military and police dogs and their power and trainability definitely helped them a lot adjusting to their new roles.
  • AKC Recognition:

    The first Rottweiler ever to set foot in the U.S.A came with a German emigrant in the late 1920s. And, the first ever Rottie that was registered by the AKC was named Stina von Felsenmeer and it was recognized in 1931.

  • Loyal, Dedicated and Obedient:

    When trained and treated properly, Rottweilers are exceptional companions. They are extremely loyal and devoted to their loved ones and are very protective of them as well. They also listen to their owner’s commands quite sincerely and always try to please them during the training sessions making them one of the most obedient canines of all time.
  • Bad Reputation:

    Because of various unethical breeding practices at numerous puppy mills, some of the new Rottie puppies that were born were not fully healthy, both physically and mentally. And because of that a few of the Rottie canines became notorious for attacking people and other animals. And, this led to the whole Rottweiler breed gaining a bad reputation as people became fearful of the Rotties in general. But, these unfortunate events are just a drop in the ocean and people need to understand how friendly and good-natured these Rotties actually are. They just need a good and experienced owner who can properly train them and teach them the ways of life just like a baby has to be taught at the beginning of his/her life.

Some Remarkable Facts about Rottweilers

  • 9/11, NYC:

    After the horrific terror attacks on the twin towers that took place on September 11, 2001, in New York City, many rescue dogs were deployed at the site. Along with Labrador Retrievers and German Shepherds, the Rottweilers also valiantly searched the affected area.
  • Good Dog Carl:

    This famous book series features a Rottweiler named Carl that takes care of a little girl named Madeleine. Written by Alexandra Day, the first book was released in 1985 and since then more than 20 books based on Carl the Rottie has been released.
